Atlanta, February 4, 2022 – In his first State of the Judiciary address, Chief Justice David E. Nahmias will focus on how Georgia’s judiciary has responded to the challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

His remarks will emphasize how courts of all classes around the state have worked to remain as functional as possible to ensure that citizens have access to justice.

The annual address to the Georgia Legislature is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 11 a.m.

During his address, Chief Justice Nahmias will highlight the courts’ use of videoconference technology to conduct certain proceedings remotely, as well as creative strategies judges have employed to protect the health of all participants when proceedings need to be conducted in person in courtrooms.

Chief Justice Nahmias also will discuss how trial courts are struggling to deal with backlogs of cases caused by pandemic-related constraints on court operations, especially jury trials, on top of handling new cases that are continually being filed.

The speech to the joint session of the House and Senate will take place in the House Chambers of the Capitol. Media will receive an embargoed copy of the Chief Justice’s remarks prior to the address on Tuesday morning. The speech will be live-streamed by Georgia Public Broadcasting at https://www.gpb.org/lawmakers/2022/state-of-the-judiciary.
