Atlanta, Sept. 5, 2018 – Superior Court Judge Kimberly A. Childs of the Cobb Judicial Circuit has been designated to serve in place of Justice Nels S. D. Peterson in the appeal of Housing Authority of Augusta v. Gould (S18G0524). The Supreme Court of Georgia will hear arguments in the case Sept. 10, 2018 during its 10:00 A.M. session. In this case, the Augusta Housing Authority is appealing a lower court’s ruling that a woman whose Section 8 housing benefits were revoked by the Authority has a right to appeal the decision in court. In addition to hearing arguments, Judge Childs will participate in the Court’s decision.

Judge Childs, 45, won a contested race for an open seat on the Cobb Superior Court bench in May 2016, taking office on Jan. 1, 2017. Prior to serving on the bench, Judge Childs was in private practice with The Childs Law Firm.

Judge Childs graduated magna cum laude from Georgia State University College of Law in 2002. She obtained her undergraduate degree in criminal justice from North Georgia College in Dahlonega in 1994. Prior to attending law school, Judge Childs worked as a guard at the DeKalb County Jail. She later worked as a paralegal at a small law firm in Cobb County.

Judge Childs has been recognized as a Georgia Super Lawyer, a Georgia Super Lawyer Rising Star, and a Business Law Legal Elite. In 2016, she was named to the Top 100 Georgia Super Lawyers list, as well as to the Top 50 Women Super Lawyers in both 2015 and 2016. Judge Childs is the immediate past president of the Cobb County Bar Association. She is also a member of the Georgia Association for Women Lawyers and the Lawyers Club of Atlanta. As a former paralegal, she serves on the Kennesaw State University Paralegal Program Advisory Board.

Judge Childs lives in Smyrna, Georgia with her husband and children.
