Atlanta, August 20, 2018 – Justice Michael P. Boggs of the Supreme Court of Georgia has been
asked to join the Board of Visitors of the Mercer University School of Law. Dean Cathy Cox
announced Friday that Justice Boggs is one of five new members named to the special Board,
which advises the Dean and supports the Law School.

The 22-member board is composed of attorneys and judges who are all alumni of Mercer’s Law
School. Justice Boggs earned his Juris Doctor degree from Mercer in 1990 and along with other
new members, will serve a three-year term, beginning July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2021.

“Justice Boggs has never failed to say ‘yes’ when Mercer Law School has called on him,” said
Dean Cox. “His willingness to serve the Law School in this leadership role, despite the demands
of his position as a Supreme Court Justice, speaks volumes about the type of servant leader he is
and always has been. He’s a great role model for our students, and brings a wealth of practical,
legislative and judicial experience to our Board of Visitors.”

Among its duties, the Board is charged with helping to define the academic goals of the Mercer
School of Law, enhance its reputation, assist in recruiting high-quality students, and help ensure
the graduation and placement of ethical, practice-ready legal professionals.

Justice Boggs was appointed to the Supreme Court of Georgia by Governor Nathan Deal on Dec.
7, 2016. Previously, he served as a Judge on the state’s intermediate appellate court, the Court of
Appeals of Georgia and as a Superior Court judge for the six-county Waycross Judicial Circuit in
southeast Georgia.

Prior to becoming a judge, Justice Boggs was in private law practice in Atlanta before returning
to his hometown of Waycross where he maintained a general trial practice from 1992 to 2004. In
2000, he was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives where he served for four years. He
has served on multiple councils and commissions, including Georgia’s Special Council on
Criminal Justice Reform, the National Task Force on Fines, Fees and Bail Practices, and the
Executive Committee of the Council of State Governments Justice Center.
