Atlanta, November 7, 2022 – The Supreme Court of Georgia will honor Reporter of Decisions Jean Ruskell, who is retiring at the end of the year after several decades of service to Georgia’s appellate courts.

Chief Justice Michael P. Boggs will present Ruskell with the Court’s Amicus Curiae award at the beginning of the oral argument session on November 8, 2022. The Amicus Curiae (Latin for “friend of the court”) is one of the most prestigious awards bestowed by the state’s highest court on judges, attorneys, and others who have provided exceptional service to Georgia’s judicial system and citizens.

Ruskell began her career with the courts as an Assistant Reporter of Decisions of the Supreme Court of Georgia and the Georgia Court of Appeals in 1995 and was promoted to Reporter of Decisions in 2005. In that role, she oversees the preparation and editing of all the opinions of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals for publication in the official court reports. It’s estimated that during her tenure with the courts, she has read more than 185,000 pages of opinions.

“Our Court looks forward to publicly recognizing Jean Ruskell for her dedication and hard work, which has undoubtedly ensured the accuracy and integrity of our decisions over the years,” said Chief Justice Boggs. “We will miss Jean’s deep institutional knowledge of the courts and the law, as well as her keen eye and kind demeanor. She is truly an unsung hero of the appellate courts.”

Media are welcome to cover the award presentation. Any media planning to photograph, video, or broadcast the event should complete a request form online. The event also will be live-streamed on the Court website at gasupreme.us.
