The Supreme Court of Georgia will hold its first day of August oral arguments at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School on Tuesday, Aug. 22.

It is tradition for the Court to hold special sessions at locations, including law schools, around the state for the purpose of making the Court’s business and the judicial process more accessible to the public. The last time the Court convened at Atlanta’s John Marshall was in April 2009. The Court also held a special session at the John Marshall Savannah campus in 2016.

“My colleagues and I always look forward to holding oral arguments off-site at one of our state’s five law schools, and we especially look forward to returning to Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School for the first time in more than a decade,” said Chief Justice Michael P. Boggs. “While our oral arguments are always open to the public and live-streamed, these remote sessions allow citizens, including law students, to observe our Court in action and provide an opportunity for them to better understand the work of our state’s Supreme Court and the role of the judiciary in our government.”

During this special session at John Marshall, the Court will hear appeals in two related criminal cases and one civil caseThe State v. Ledbetter, S23A0900, and Ledbetter v. The State, S23X0901, which will be argued together, and Collington v. Clayton County et al., S22G1146. Oral arguments will begin at 10 a.m. Eastern, following a brief attorney admission ceremony. All nine of the Court’s Justices will be present. The Court’s August oral argument schedule includes a separate, subsequent day of proceedings in its courtroom inside the Nathan Deal Judicial Center in downtown Atlanta on Aug. 23.

“We are truly humbled and honored by the Georgia Supreme Court’s decision to conduct a special session of oral arguments at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School,” said Dean Jace C. Gatewood. “As we prepare to welcome the Justices, we invite our esteemed colleagues, students, and alumni to join us in celebrating this historic occasion.”

The event will be live-streamed on the Court’s website at gasupreme.us.
