Atlanta, July 17, 2017 – The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia did not make it into
work Monday morning. Instead, P. Harris Hines reported for jury duty at the Cobb County
Superior Court.

“As citizens, each of us has a duty – and the privilege – to serve as jurors when called. I’m no
different than anyone else,” said the head of the highest court of the state.

Chief Justice Hines reported sharply at 8:30 a.m., as required, and took it all in stride. But not
everyone did.

“When some people realized who he was, I think they were surprised to see the head of the
judicial branch of government, who presides as a judge over criminal and civil appeals, willing
to switch places and serve as a juror,” said Chief Judge Tain Kell of the Cobb Judicial Circuit.
“The jury system is the bedrock of our democracy, and it’s heartening for all of us to see our
Chief Justice play his part.”
